Reading Notes: Down the Rabbit Hole, Extra Credit

For this extra credit reading, I chose to read "Down the Rabbit Hole," "Down the Rabbit Hole (cont.)" and "Down the Rabbit Hole (end)."

Down the Rabbit Hole
These three stories tell the original Alice in Wonderland story of Alice following the rabbit to the rabbit hole. I wanted to reread these stories so that I could brainstorm ideas for my storybook project!

Alice was having a boring day until she saw a white rabbit that was in a hurry. Because she was so bored, she was extra interested in the rabbit. The rabbit took a watch out of his pocket and spoke that he was going to be late, which Alice didn't know if she imagined. So she followed the rabbit as it ran away. Alice followed the rabbit right into a rabbit hole that she didn't see, and fell down the long tunnel whether she wanted to or not. Down and down it went, and Alice wondered when she'd ever hit the ground... And where'd she'd be when she did.

Down the Rabbit Hole (cont.)
Alice continued to fall and was daydreaming on her way down. She had been in the air for so long! When Alice finally landed, she was not hurt at all. The only thing she saw was the white rabbit dashing into a passage, so she quickly followed him. At one point she lost the rabbit, and she was in a hall alone with a bunch of lamps and doors that wouldn't open. Alice found a table with a key on top, but the key did not fit any of the doors in sight. Then Alice lifted a curtain and found a door 15 inches high, and the key fit right into the lock.

The door opened into a lovely garden with bright flowers and pretty scenery. Alice realized her body couldn't fit through the door, so she debated just sticking her head through it to look around. Alice started to believe anything was possible. Alice went back to the table in hopes of finding another key, but instead found a bottle labeled "drink me" that had not been there the first time around. Alice was careful to examine the bottle before drinking it, as she knew better from previous horror stories. Since the bottle was not labeled poisonous, Alice finished all of it.

Down the Rabbit Hole (end)
Alice found herself to be transforming after drinking the bottle. She was becoming the size to fit into the door that led to the garden, and she was very excited but also very nervous. Alice was finally the right size and quickly went to the door. She realized she left the key behind, but was now too small to reach the key on the table. She tried everything she could, but was exhausted and cried because she couldn't get to it. Alice was trying to give herself a pep talk, as she always gave herself good advice. Then Alice saw a small box labeled "eat me," and she knew it had to have come from the same creature that left her the bottle. Since that liquid was safe, she figured this was safe too. She knew she'd either get bigger and reach the key, or get smaller to get under the door so she was content with either. She was eating and waiting for herself to either grow or shrink, but neither happened. She finished the cake.

These stories reminded me about the story of Alice. To add my PR component to this original story, I'm going to have Alice be given a WonderPhone instead of a key when she gets to Wonderland in the rabbit hole!

  1. Hey Demery! I read both of the Alice books this semester and I loved them. I am glad that someone else read them, as well. Lewis Carroll's stories are perfect for turning into your own. His imagination is wild and limitless, so it is fun to tweak his stories around. I have not looked yet, but I hope you wrote a story based off of some of his works!
