Reading Notes: Pig and Pepper, Extra Credit

Pig and Pepper
Alice is continuing her way through Wonderland and spots odd creatures. First, she comes across a Fish-Footman (a fish head on a human body) and a Frog-Footman. Alice watched them interact and found it comical, so she ran into the woods to laugh. Upon returning she came up to the Fish Footman who was near the door and asked to be let in. The Footman was somewhat rude, she thought, because he just kept asking her if she thought she'd one day get in (which she obviously wanted to). After many interactions like this, she realized he was just idiotic and went in herself. Alice saw a Duchess nursing a child, a cat and a cook cooking soup that had far too much pepper in it, as everyone in the home was sneezing except for the cat. Alice is introduced to the cat by the Duchess and gets told it's a Chesire cat. Alice found it odd that a cat was grinning in the way he was.

Pig and Pepper (cont)
The Duchess told Alice that all cats grin this way. Alice says she didn't know that, and the Duchess makes a rude comment that Alice clearly doesn't know much. The kitchen utensils began flying around the kitchen which hit everyone inside. The Duchess began to sing to her child a lullaby about the pepper soup and then offered some to Alice. The Duchess announced that she had to leave soon to meet the Queen and left Alice with her child. Alice felt bad for the child as it was clearly poorly cared for, so she decided she needed to look out for it. The child was not cute, she didn't think, and she said to it that it cannot turn into a pig (which is what it already resembled) or she will not like it anymore.
Pig and Pepper (end)
After hearing the child make noise, Alice realizes it really was a pig. She set the creature down into the woods. She went back to the home and consulted with the cat to figure out where she wanted to go next. Alice told the cat she doesn't know where she wants to go, but she wants to go somewhere. The cat told her she'll get somewhere in any direction she chooses. However, the cat informed Alice there were a few "mad" animals one way. Alice said she didn't want to be around mad people, and the cat said everyone in Wonderland is mad, including him and her. The cat told Alice he'd be at croquet with the Queen along with the Duchess, and Alice has not yet been invited. The cat leaves only to return moments later to ask about the child. Alice told the cat it was a pig, to which he wasn't surprised. The cat left and came back yet again to ask if Alice said pig or fig. Alice and the cat had conversations and she could not get over its grin. Alice decided to head toward the Mad Hare, and once getting close wished she had gone to see the Mad Hatter instead.

I chose to read this story because it introduced many Alice in Wonderland characters that I could potentially use for my storybook in the future. Of these three pieces, I think I'd focus on the Pig and Pepper ending where Alice and the grinning Chesire cat are interacting. This character is well-known in Wonderland, and I think it could be cool if Alice and the Chesire cat set out on an adventure together toward the Mad Hatter, since Alice has already met the Mad Hatter in my storybook. Their adventure to see him, as well as seeing how the Hatter and the Chesire cat interact, could be fun to write!
