Week 10 Storytelling: The Chiefs of the Land

Once upon a time, there was a family that was highly looked down upon. The family consisted of a young girl and her four children. However, they weren't like any regular family.

The young girl gave birth to four puppies. This is because she was impregnated by a dog who turned into a human at night. The girl's family was embarrassed by her, as they thought she lied about how she got pregnant since she was only ever with her dog. The family left her alone to fend for herself. The girl gave birth to four puppies and raised them alone.

The puppies had something in common with their father: they, too, turned into human boys. The girl raised the boys alone, away from the society that so harshly ridiculed her. She knew they wouldn't understand her lifestyle. The only being that knew about her children's inhumane abilities was the local Crow, who often watched the puppies turn into boys. When the mother spotted the Crow watching her family sing and dance, she knew she had to beg the the Crow to keep quiet.

"Please don't tell anyone that we exist," said the woman. "No one will believe you, and if they do, they'll try to come find us and kill us."

The Crow really wanted to tell the rest of society the family's secret. The Crow knew this was insider information, and people would love to hear this crazy story. The Crow also felt sympathy for the woman, as she was raising four children alone. The Crow was conflicted on keeping the secret or telling everyone, but decided to spare the family from the ridicule.

The Crow carried on with its life as if it never saw anything. The four boys were excellent hunters and, as a gift, offered the Crow food that they caught any time the Crow pleased. The Crow's decision to honor the family ended up being the best decision it had ever made, and the Crow became really close with the family. The Crow was basically a sibling of the four puppies, and they loved to hunt together and play for happily ever after.

Author's Note
The original story is about a young girl that's family condemned her for getting pregnant. Turns out, she got pregnant from a dog that turned into a human. The girl got pregnant and had four puppies, but they eventually turned into young boys. A Crow was the only being that knew about their families secrets, and the Crow saw the young boys with their mother. The mother begged the Crow to tell the rest of the village that all of them died, so that they'd stop looking for them. The Crow did not do so in the original story, and instead took advantage of them. I changed it to where the Crow did what they asked.

  1. Demery, I like that you told this story with a happy ending. It is already pretty sad that the girl is alone and her family does not want anything to do with her, and it would be even more sad if the crow then took advantage of them by telling their secret. I liked the friendship that formed between the two, great job!

  2. Hi Demery, I really enjoyed your take on this myth, and it sure is one of the more interesting ones! I haven't read the original, so your author's note was super helpful in clearing up any questions I had. Always down to see a twist to a happy ending considering how many of these stories end horribly! Nice work on this one!
